Jan M. Löfström, who has earned graduate degrees at the University of Helsinki (M.A.) and the University of Essex (Ph.D.), holds an appointment as a university lecturer in history and social studies education at the University of Helsinki, and as a docent in historical anthropology at the University of Jyvaskyla. He researches the cultural construction of gender, sexuality, and homosexuality in rural cultures. He is editor of Scandinavian Homosexualities: Essays on Gay and Lesbian Studies (1998), and author of Gender Difference in Rural Culture (in Finnish, 1999).
