Graham Willett has been active in gay, left, and trade union politics since 1979. He currently teaches Australian Studies at the University of Melbourne. Has has researched, written, and taught on a range of issues to
do with Australian history, politics, and society. He has a particular interest in the ways in which Australia has become a tolerant, pluralist, and republican society over the past thirty years. He is the author of
Living Out Loud: A History of Gay and Lesbian Activism in Australia,
co-editor of Australia's Homosexual Histories, and an active member of
the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives.

Given its history, it is somewhat surprising that Australia now has exceptionally gay-friendly laws and public attitudes, with widespread public tolerance and acceptance of the glbtq community.
