Richard M Berrong is Professor of French and co-coordinator of the GLBT Studies minor at Kent State University. He is the author of In Love with a Handsome Sailor: The Emergence of Gay Identity and the Novels of Pierre Loti and Rabelais and Bakhtin: Popular Culture in "Gargantua and Pantagruel", as well as other books and articles on French literature and opera.

One of the most popular and respected French novelists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Julien Viaud, who wrote under the name Pierre Loti, created a series of novels that chronicle the struggle of a man to understand his homoerotic feelings.
