  Contributor Biography:  Laurent Long 
 
Dr. Laurent Long is the only French scholar researching China’s queer past and present. He is a member of the Chinese Society for the study of Historical Documents and the first Western member of the Xiling Seal carving Society in Hangzhou, the best known calligraphers’ and seal carvers’ organization in China. He researches tongzhi China as an independent scholar.

The only contemporary civilization with written materials dating back some 3500 years, China boasts a rich, 2500-year-old continuous tradition of male-male love, as well as somewhat less rich traditions of what we would now call lesbianism and gender nonconformity.
