Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Campus Life the Director will provide strategic leadership and be responsible for directing the daily operation of the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Transgender Life to include planning, developing and promoting programmatic activities to ensure the Center's objectives are met. The Director supports lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, staff, and faculty. The Director designs and implements a co-curricular education for the university-at-large that pertains to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender life on and off campus.

The Director establishes and implements the supervisory structure and oversees work of all Center employees including an Assistant Director, Administrative Assistant, graduate interns and work-study students. Student development responsibilities include advising and counseling students in group and individual setting in matters pertaining to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender curricular and co-curricular projects; supervising students and student organizations in various projects and activities of a cultural, social and academic nature;and providing students with counseling and support in areas of interpersonal needs.

It will be important for the Director to develop affiliations with myriad Duke academic departments and programs whose interests intersect with gender expression and sexuality. Working cooperatively with academic departments to develop and sponsor activities and events of a cultural and intellectual significance to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students and scholars is expected as well as meetings with University constituencies and Durham community to increase awareness of the Center, its resources, programs, scholarships, employment opportunities and objectives.

The Director joins a team of Campus Life cultural center and department directors who provide feedback and analyses and who design programs that help create and sustain a welcoming campus climate for all students. The Director will specifically address areas of concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, staff and faculty and mediate conflicts on campus arising from lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender issues.

Qualifications:
Minimum Masters degree is required; a Doctorate is preferred. Candidate must have experience developing and managing a cultural center or similar facility and demonstrate success in staff recruitment, development and retention. Expertise in delivering program and education services to students surrounding LGBT issues as well as consultation services for staff, faculty, and other constituencies is expected. Candidates must possess advanced oral, written and cross cultural communication skills and an ability to negotiate and resolve multiple complex problems in a timely manner. Exemplary planning and organizational skills are required. Must demonstrate computer literacy.
