I am researching modernist women writers, mainly expatriates in Paris and London of the 20s. A comparison of Jean Rhys to H.D., Djuna Barnes, and others in relation to body awareness, clothing, fashion and influence of Victorian dandies is proposed. Male modernists tended to insist on a spare, ascetic, masculine (presumably anti-flowery feminine) style, but women, in order to find a feminine style of their own turned to poets and writers of the Victorian era for models, Oscar Wilde and Swinburne in particular. It seems they borrowed their styles of dress, too. Any thoughts?
