From The First Gay Pope And Other Records by Lynne Yamaguchi Fletcher, page 23, under the heading "gay, the first recorded use of the word in reference to homosexuality", it says:
"In the American Underworld and Prison Slang by Noel Ersine, published in 1935. The entry was for "geycat", "a homosexual boy." Though this was the first unambiguous use of the word in print in a homosexual context, it was in spoken use for more than a decade before.
Indeed, in 1922, Gertrude Stein published a hsort story called "Miss Fur and Miss Skeene," in which two women live together learning "ways of being gay."
"She was gay enough," Miss Furr finds, "she was always gay exactly the same way, she was always learning little things to use in being gay...she would always be gay in the same way..."
In Slang and Euphemism by Richard A. Spears, under 'gay' on page 156, it gives the origin of the use of the word as meaning homosexual as....
"U.S. underworld and then slang, early 1900-pres[ent] now widely known U.S. slang." |

In Victorian England, and probably before, female and male prostitutes were called "gay" |

Can anyone tell me the name of the teenager who tried to start the first gay-straight alliance in Utah, the name of her high school, and the date? The school board reacted by forbidding all after-school clubs, and there was a long battle.
