In the section from the 1940's, one of the most startling works of fiction is missing.
Startling, because not only was it one of the bigger bestsellers of its era, but also inspired an even more well-known (and Oscar-winning) film --Charles Jackson's The Lost Weekend.
The protagonist of the novel is a repressed gay man, and the author is not in the least oblique about it. Jackson continued to write unflinchingly about homosexuality throughout his subsequent output, but seems to be almost completely forgotten

Most people only know the movie, in which the protagonist's homosexuality is deleted as a cause for his alcoholism.
