It was very disheartening to hear of the defeat of marriage equality in the New York Senate. So many senators, so little courage. Most disheartening of all is the fact that 8 Democratic senators voted against marriage equality. I did not expect anything of Republicans, and they didn't disappoint me. But the failure of Democratic senators to support equal rights is very disturbing. It shows that the Democrats are not worthy of being a governing party. They don't know how to build coalitions, or at least to honor the coaltions that they build. They depend on gay votes and gay money, but they fail to support gay issues. _________________ Jay |

Here In Nw York there are a number of Democrats opposed to gay marriage and protections for transgender people. I'm not sure how that stacks with Democrats in other states but there are a number of conservative Democrats in New York State. The next move is to take this to the courts. Putting people's civil rights to a vote is both wrong and,in my humble opinion, inhumane.

Genee, the issue of marriage equality has already been to the courts in New York. The highest court there ruled that there is no right to same-sex marriage. Please see the entry on Same-sex marriage, especially the section on New York.
