Reid at the top of his matinee idol career became addicted to morphine [like a lot of civil war soldiers whose first taste was during surgery on the CW battlefield] - and died tragically at age 31 from morphine in 1923.
Some period articles HINT or even directly point to "Wally" telling behavior "gay-side" in rather confirming language for the post-death writings in 1920's. Wallace Reid married, had two children [one or both who died tragically, again as I recall from drugs/alcoholism] - shunned women and had a coterie of male bonding buddies in his 24-hours "open house" at his home.
Reid was born with absolutely stunning looks -adored openly by men and boys in the silent film polls and public adulation - and a workaholic who always hated himself inwardly for "unmanly" acting and face make-up when others his age were serving in World War One and Reid called himself a "slacker" in dirision. Hmmmmm??
