Regarding the article on this site about gay symbols
(, where
it says:

"In the mid-1980s ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash
Power) adopted the triangle but with the point facing
upward to symbolize the need for ?an active fight back
rather than a passive resignation to fate.?

Can the actual date be documented? As far as I know,
I'm the originator of the idea to wear the pink
triangle point upward...and my proposal was published
in 1989. Until I stand corrected, I lay claim to the
originator of this idea. See my article:

Origin Of The Uppity Pink Triangle

Wherein I state:

"The reason I broke tradition by painting the pink
triangle as upward-pointing (instead of down), is to
symbolize the ascension of the gay/lesbian
community...and a reversal of the world's attitude from
negative to positive."

A few months after publishing this letter (S.F. Bay
Area Reporter, Apr. 20, '89), Act-Up distributed its
first line of up-pointing pink triangles on T-shirts
and decals. At least, it was the first line *I* ever

Hopefully, who originated this idea can be documented,
in order to clear up this matter of whether or not I
was the first to suggest wearing the triangle in this

To make matters more complicated, I changed my name
legally in 1996 (to what it remains: Ezekiel J.
Krahlin). Until then, it was Gene Catalano (my birth
name). Evidence of my name change can be found at:

So: can anyone document a letter, copyright, or other evidence
that proves the point-up triangle as being created prior to 1989,
by another? TIA.
