British film director John Schlesinger, famous for his groundbreaking films, including many that frankly represented homoerotic desire, died yesterday (July 24) in Palm Springs. It was my privilege to write the glbtq.com essay on his life of achievements. For those of you who have never seen his films, particularly his 1960s British-made works (e.g., Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Sunday Bloody Sunday), you owe it to yourself to do so.

There was an excellent obit on Schlesinger in the Los Angeles Times shortly after his death.
A few of the LA gay papers have also published tributes, one including comments from Schlesinger's long-time companion.
While admitting that JS had his directorial ups and downs, I also include several of his films among the best of all time:
BILLY LIAR, DARLING, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY, MIDNIGHT COWBOY.
A personal favorite of mine is his lesser-known AN ENGLISHMAN ABROAD, an adaptation of a British stage play about a gay cold war spy whose name eludes me at tthe moment (Guy Burgess?). A delicious and scathing politial drama/comedy as only the British can seem to do them anymore.
I'm new to this site. I hope this hits the correct discussion spot. :) _________________ RecordWracked |
