Interesting question. And this might strike as odd, but Red River is a wonderful gay film. The scenes between Montgomery Clift and John Ireland are layered with a gay (sub)text. As, in some ways, are the scenes between Clift and John Wayne.
Also, thinking of Wayne, how about The Quiet Man? I've always felt the real love story in that film is between Wayne and Victor MacGlaglen. By the end, Wayne and McGlaglen are arm-in-arm, walking over the countryside, and they're at the table together at the end, as they're served by Maureen O'Hara.
Another is Ben-Hur, especially those scenes between Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd. It's especially intriguing the Gore Vidal had a hand in the screenplay. |
