Barry White is Immortalized In Theater
Disabled Police Officer Pens Musical Tribute To The Maestro
Retired NYC Police Officer Emmitt Thrower who became disabled due to a Brain Stem Stroke stroke in 2001 pens an off Broadway musical and concert about the legendary Barry White. | Quote: | | The musical explores the life of poverty, gangs and violence that were conditions that produced the "Icon of Love" and his timeless romantic music. |
Lanar who portrays Barry White is the Musical Director as well and the initial motivator of the idea. Lanar brought the idea to Emmitt who agreed that the lives and music of contemporary African American musicians were lacking on the Broadway and Off Broadway scenes. While Caucasian contemporary musicians lives, stories and music have often found their way to the Broadway and Off Broadway stages. Such is not the case with contemporary Black musicians.
The musical which had a staged reading to a sold out audience on April 28, 2007 in NYC, will open June 14th to 24th at the Times Square Arts Center located at 300 W 43rd street Room 411. The show times are Thursday-Saturday at 8 PM, Saturday at 3 PM, Sunday at 4 PM. No show Thursday June 21st. Wabi Sabi Productions, who produced the play and the recent New York Multimedia Hip Hop Musical called Katrina:A Whole Lotta Water, has partnered with ProductionHub.com as well as New York based and world renowned Kingsway Boxing Gym and Date Jeans, to help bring this historical theatrical event to the Off Broadway stage. Plans are to tour the production if it garners enough support and interest around the country. The producer is also looking to bring this Musical to Broadway.The play which runs in two acts for about 2 hours includes a free mini Barry White Tribute concert at the conclusion.
Venus Adore a multitalented singer and actress portrays lead singer and Barry's wife Glodean of The Love UnLimited singers. The show features Nu Millennium A Capella Soul who add their special brand of soulful vocals to the mix. They will portray the singing group “The Upfronts” and also gang members of the “Businessmen” clan in the production. Two world class dancers and choreographers Karen Amatrading and Valentine Aprile portray "Love" and "Lady Music". Destiny is portrayed by singer/actress Gezele Portwood, Elvis is played by actor Eddy Privitizer, Pamela Cornelius, a world traveled singer/actress, plays Linda and Jessica Opong an up and coming young singer plays Dee Dee Of the Love Unlimited singers. writer/director/actor Emmitt Thrower takes on the role of the great Muhammad Ali, who was a good friend of Barry White.
In "Barry White: Guided By Destiny" Emmitt explores Barry White's preoccupation with perfection and the guiding voice that led him to greatness. His relationships with Muhammad Ali and Elvis Presley whom he credits with literally changing his life because of his hit song "Now or Never" are also chronicled. His life long friendship with his 2nd wife Glodean is a feature of play.
Lanar, a talented singer, has performed with such R and B legends as The Manhattans, Kevin Owens longtime Luther Vandross backup singer now lead singer of Ray, Goodman and Brown, The Persuaders, Cameo, The Legendary Intruders and he also worked with Ray Serrano of Africa Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force. He is a managing partner with radio host and promoter M. Martin Hall. Lanar recently appeared at the Apollo Theater in a special show on May 30, 2007.
