University of Manchester, England
April 15-16, 2005
For registration and more information visit http://www.art.man.ac.uk/ARTHIST/visualities/
The Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture at the University of Manchester wish to announce:
Theorising Queer Visualities: A Symposium
April 15-16, 2005
Theorising Queer Visualities brings together international voices who are at the forefront of rethinking what queer means in relation to visual theory and practice across the disciplines of cinema and television studies, media studies, art history and criticism, lesbian/gay/bi/trans studies, women's and gender studies, performance and theatre studies, history, history of science, and other related fields. The symposium will address visual theories and practices relating to film, television, dance, performance, painting, sculpture, installation, multi-media visual art, and other aspects of visual culture.
The Symposium will address the following questions: What are queer visualities? Can we talk about queer visualities as existing in historical periods? How does queerness manifest itself in visual ways (or does it)? What does it mean to visualize or make visual imagery in a queer way? What does it mean to theorize visuality from a queer perspective? Can thinking about visuality (theories of the visual as well as visual culture objects and practices of all kinds, from painting to performance to the Internet and
beyond) in a queer way unseat conventional structures of seeing, knowing, and being? Are queer visualities necessarily radical or might they in some ways replicate existing, hegemonic structures of vision and subjectivity? How do queer visualities cut across formations of gender, race, ethnicity, and class? What do they have to do with modernity and its structures of visibility and cultural value? Postmodernity?
This event will include keynote statements from internationally known scholars from the UK and other countries, several performances and/or presentations by visual practitioners, and a series of related position papers addressing queer visualities, with ample question and answer time.
While all the speakers and performers have been invited (there are no open submissions), postgraduate students should note that on Sunday, April 17, 2005 there will be a postgraduate conference called ³Theorising Queer Visualities.² For more information on this event, please contact: Jane Chin Davidson <janechindavidson@alumni.reed.edu>
