heroine films - grassroots approach
In the vain of Ms. DiFranco, Melissa Ferrick, the Indigo Girls, Christine Vachon, Guinevere Turner, etc. I'm writing to you all today to ask for support.
The women at heroine films are taking an unconventional approach to getting their lil' indie lesbian film, The Gladdest Thing made (despite what the conservative businessmen in their ivory towers in NC have to say about it!)
About a year ago, the money fell through.
So, we did what any group of young filmmakers trying to make their baby would do...We drowned our sorrows in amaretto sours and sheer panic. Then we tried again, and again and again. And to our dismay no investors with pockets full of cash came running to our aid. It seems down here in North Kakalack they don't much like lesbians or the films they want to make (the NYIIF doesn't seem to have a problem with us!). We were armed with a fabulous script, an award winning team, fresh young talent, everything but the finances.
That’s when we decided to become our own heroines.
Basically, we believe in our art and are willing to do any and everything in order to be able to create it. So, while we continue to pitch to investors, we are making t-shirts and websites, flyers and anything else we can think of to make our films, this one (the Gladdest Thing) and the many more to come.
We've got $500,000 to raise and we're doing it one dollar at a time. Here's our plan --- we get as many people (via phone, e-mail, walking the streets, concerts, GLBTQ events, film festivals, you name it...) to check our website and donate a dollar a piece and we'll be able to get our lil' lesbian film in the can and get throught the first few months with our production company.
Please do us a favor and stop by the website to check out where we're at in our endeavors...let us know what you think and if you have a spare dollar, please donate (we'll give you credit in the film). $7 or more and you get a hot pair of boy undies with your very own heroine over the front pocket (modeled by the lovely Amanda [lead actress - Kate Parker] on the website) $10 or more and you get a kick ass beater t (got heroine?)! ;)
Please pass this on to anyone you think will be interested.
check us out at: www.heroinefilms.net - please be patient...we're experiencing A LOT of traffic these days!
Best to you all! Thanks for your support...
Please inquire at the website about how you can help! _________________ xox the gals at heroine films

Thanks to Wik's(glbtq's publisher) invite to post here, heroine films will be posting updates about their endeavors ona weekly (hopefully) basis!
We also just want to say thanks to all who're stopping by heroine films and supporting us. it means so much. You all are amazing. If you're interested at all in helping fundraise, please e-mail mel at mel@heroinefilms.net to find how you can help too..
Latest update: We have flyers up on the site and the paypal kinks have been worked out. The prototype for the shirts has been worked out and we're working with a local screen printer on getting them looking their best, so look for updates on that.
We will unleashing the trailers on everyone at the end of february (exact dates will be coming) and we've been offered PR help to get the story out there to all the glbt magazines and newspapers across the globe. So what we need is your feedback and support to make a good case for our lil' grassroots effort. We've already had over 1000 hits on the site in the past three days and it keeps growing...all because of you!!
So thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You've already brought tears to our eyes (Kaite in Ediburgh - we love you!)
Onward and upward. thanks! and stop by.
Anyone in Chapel Hill? We'll be at the Vagina Monologues at UNC Feb 11-13 and at the GLBT Film Fest this weekend. Stop by!

We just wrapped on the trailer! Shot for three days this last weekend...complete guerilla style and had an amazing time!
here's our latest blog entry about the trailer:
Well, what can we say...
We spent the whole weekend filming and everything turned out greeeeat!!! Even if we did pull a 21 hour shooting day on Saturday and we got NO sleep, we're incredibly happy with the way everything turned out. It was nice to get back to true guerilla style filmmaking and we had the help of friends and family...
We just want to say thanks to the following people:
Rob Givens - for loaning us his camera (we LOVE you!!!!)
Ethan Silverman - for loaning us the best location ever AND for putting up with our crew and all our extras for the longest night of filming ever!!!
Ian Sherrington - for running around with us and being a kick ass DP (and for the lighting kit!)
Olivia Ramo - for showing up in between and after shifts to act for us.
Cherrae Stuart - for being the best, most supportive (and gorgeous) friend/actor we know!!!
Ian Bloom - for the extras lights
Drew Coombs - for driving all that way to play the best Cooch ever!!!
Phil & Justin - for stepping in when we needed you most!
Vickie Hannah - for stepping up and playing Marlene for us again
Mr. Wayne Crawford - ;) just thank you...
From here, we'll be catching up on e-mail, sending out the shirts/undies, cutting the trailer and the interviews (COMING SOON!!!), doing more print interviews and just trying to survive on less than 5 hours of sleep each night! ;)
Side note: Thanks to whomever it was that announced heroine films at the ashevile drag show last week. We heard about it, but don't know how it happened!!
Also, look for the gladdest thing trailer at the next Drag it in, Drag it out show in Durham (hopefully)! We're working on it...
You all have been soooo supportive and it was so amazing to get the sweet e-mails while we were doing the hard days of the shoot. It kept us moving!
love you all! More later...
