Hi,
Didn't know where to post this.
I keep hearing that the author of "the joy of lesbian sex" went straight and got married. I've searched, to the best of my ability all over the web and can't find anything one way or another about it being true or false. Can any of you tell me where I can verify this? I really hope there's no truth to the rumor, cuz it ruins my opinion of the book.
Thanks |

I must say this is a scarey urban legend, if true it's more scandolous than say... Anne Heche. I would suggest plugging the authors name and the term "biography" into a RELIABLE search engine; as in don't completely trust wikipedia. There are also a few sites dedicated to urban legends. I'll look into it too, and hopefully somebody could find a fact or two... _________________ remember the riots |

You don't say which of the co-authors is the subject of the rumor, but if it was Bertha Harris, then the rumor is definitely false. See the entry about her in the Literature department of www.glbtq.com. Although she was briefly married when she was young, her "longtime companion" was another woman, Camilla Clay Smith.
Information about co-author Emily Sisley is, as you noted, rather difficult to find. All that I came up with was a letter to the editor of *Episcopal Life* in January 2005 from a Dr. Emily L. Sisley (right title, right middle initial, right location), who declared herself "totally weary of being bullied by authorities largely outside of what the 1801 Convention established as the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America" on the issue of the ordination of gay men and lesbians. Dr. Sisley went on to opine that the American church would remain strong if it separated from the more conservative Anglican Communion. While this is not definitive evidence, it shows a clear commitment by Dr. Sisley to equality for glbtq people. _________________ Linda |

I don't trust wikipedia, although I sometimes use it as a springboard. I tried the plug in of the names and biography as you said and came up empty screened. thanks for the help. |

I re"spoke" with my friends and got my own error in this urban legend straightened out! I had the wrong author!! I'm so sorry. Here is what my friend said:
The author I was talking about is JoAnn Loulan. I don't remember the names of her books. She did a lot of very impressive work in the lesbian community. And was very out spoken and lots of fun to be around. She also had a child by artificial insemination with a gay male friend of hers. Then was interviewed on the Phil Donahue show that he did on gay and lesbian parents. And then, after many years of being very active in the lesbian community, she fell in love with a man. Sigh............. But that does not mean that her books are no longer relavant, or that they should no longer be read, because they are worth reading. It's just that they are no longer relavant to her!!! Oh well, so goes life, I guess.... |
