I'm not sure how one deals with some concepts in lgbtq* literature, of which James Hanley's Boy might be an example.

This might be a semi- autobiographical narrative in which it might be that self loathing, or an hatred of homosexuality are the topic. Are these q?

But it can't be as simple as that, for the book was seized in 1934 by the Bury police, and the publisher found guilty of obscene libel. Who was libelled isn't clear.

E.M.Forster then spoke at the International Conference of Writers against Fascism in Paris, organised by Gide, and attended by Hanley about the seizure. Laski in turn spoke at the Library Assoication and his paper was published in the Record.

Parts of this I found from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, part from an article in the Library and partly from one in the Modern Langauge Review, proper citations not to hand at the moment.

Even more puzzling, for a story of a poor working class kid sent to descale ships' boilers, and a violent and abusive father, it was published by a private press on expensive paper, with binding, 145 copies, one of which is dedicated to Sterling, of Sterling library fame, and the manuscript is in the Senate House library in London. More to be found out.
