I have to explain how I came across this: A friend has lent me a series of tapes on the life of the Sufi guru and poet Rumi, narrated by Andrew Harvey, and told me that Harvey was gay. So I went and did a little research, and found an interview with Harvey online, in which he casually mentions that Ram Dass was gay. News to me, I hadn't seen that in any published sources. So I did a little more research, this guy is fascinating:
Ram Dass (Dr. Richard Alpert, 1931- ), American spiritual guru; psychologist fired from Harvard in 1963 for his research into LSD and its effects on human consciousness; author of the 1971 spiritual guidebook Be Here Now, which has sold over 1 million copies; as well as the books Grist for the Mill; Journey of Awakening; How Can I Help?; Compassion in Action: Setting Out on the Path of Service; and Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing and Dying
But I found my favourite quote from his most recent book One-Liners: A Mini-Manual for a Spiritual Life(2002):
"Treat everyone you meet like God in drag."
These and other Ram Dass quotes are online at http://www.spiritwalk.org/ramdass-quotes.htm
