In the article on Stiller it says: "Although his films do not overtly reflect on same-sex desire, his technically innovative explorations of dark themes and emotions helped forge a film culture that was later to produce the likes of Ingmar Bergman."

Is this correct? In 1916 Stiller made his version of gay novelist Herman Bang's book "Mikael". The film is in Swedish called "Vingarne" (the wings). In Scandinavia it is regarded as one of the first films ever dealing openly with a gay issue: A male artist's desperate love for his source of inspiration, the delicious Mikael.

When the article was written, "Vingarne" was thought to be a "lost" film, and it was not known how "overt" the homoerotic content of the movie was. Since 2000, a fragment of the film has been found and restored by the Swedish Film Institute, but though the source material, Herman Bang's novel "Mikael", provided the source fo Dreyer's 1924 German film, the fragment is not conclusive as to the extent of overt homosexual representation. Nevertheless, this is an example of the continuing developments in film history.
