I've just started to get into gay literature and I was lucky enough to find a book called A Sea of Stories: The Shaping Power of Narrative in Gay and Lesbian Cultures. I would really recommend this book to people interested in the study of gay literature. It helps to make sense of all that's out there and teaches you to look critically at what you read.

I came out recently and when I found gay literature, it was like emerging from poverty and starvation. I wanted to just take in whatever I could get, without looking at it critically. A Sea of Stories helped me to understand the potentially damaging effects of that behavior, as well as show a the of history of narratives in gay culture, which in turn gave shape to the vast body of work that is now available.

It's a good place to start.
