Hermaphroditism is a physical state in which both male and female characteristics are unambiguously present in a single individual. It differs from androgyny, which is a condition of ambiguous gender. Because hermaphroditism is sometimes seen as tinged with the rhetoric of the circus freak show, the term intersexuality is now the preferred term among the transgendered community.
