Heteronormativity is the assumption that heterosexuality and heterosexual norms are universal or at least the only acceptable conditions. Closely related to heterosexism, heteronormativity negatively affects glbtq people in a host of ways, from actively oppressing those who do not fulfill heterosexual expectations to rendering sexual dissidents invisible.
