The term transgender is often used as an umbrella term that embraces all gender variant individuals, including transsexuals (people who seek or have undergone gender reassignment therapy or surgery); people who alter their social gender through non-surgical means; intersexed individuals, people whose external genitalia or internal reproductive systems fall outside the norms for either male or female bodies; cross-dressers; and others who do not conform to social norms for typical men and women.
