The transformations of the novel have their parallel in drama. In recent plays emphasizing the intensity of love, gay characters are featured in tragic situations. René-Daniel Dubois's (b. 1955) Being at Home with Claude (1986) is the story of a male prostitute who turns himself in to the police, telling them that he killed a young man. The play focuses on the dialogue between the police inspector and the prostitute, who slowly puts together his feelings and discovers his love for the man he killed. This very popular play has also had a second life; in 1991, the director Jean Beaudin made a movie of it with the same title. Finally, two other plays, Les Feluettes (Lilies, or The Revival of a Romantic Dream [1988]) by Michel Marc Bouchard (b. 1958) and Provincetown Playhouse, juillet 1919, j'avais 19 ans (Provincetown Playhouse, July 1919 [1981]) by Normand Chaurette (b. 1954), should be acknowleged. In both plays, part of the action takes place at the beginning of the twentieth century, the first in Roberval, where two teenagers are deeply in love, and the other in Provincetown, where gay actors symbolically kill a child on stage. Conclusion It is difficult to predict with any certainty the future of Québécois gay and lesbian literature. AIDS, a conspicuous topic in recent books, will certainly continue to be a major concern of gay male writers, but not the only one. Lesbian writers are likely to continue to be deeply influenced by the powerful works of Nicole Brossard, Louky Bersianik, or Josée Yvon. Lesbian and gay male literature seems destined to merge into mainstream Québécois literature. This process, in fact, has already begun. Indeed, most of the recent lesbian and gay literary works discussed here have been published by prominent Québécois publishers. What is certain is that however it evolves Québécois gay and lesbian literature will continue to illuminate our lives.
