May Sarton
(1912-1996)

After a difficult struggle to find a publisher, May Sarton enjoyed a long and successful career writing poems, novels, essays, and journals. While she gradually revealed her lesbianism in her writing, Sarton angrily rejected reviewers' efforts to marginalize one of her books by labeling it a "lesbian novel."
