Lesbian Stand-Up Comedy provides an excellent example of how comedy can foster social and political awareness in both minority and mainstream communities.

As with most minority comedians, lesbian stand-up comics often use inside jokes to foster solidarity among fellow queer outsiders when performing for glbtq audiences. When performing before mainstream audiences, many are successful agents of social change because part of the magic of comedy is that a good joke forces the audience to identify with the joker.
