Diane Tanchak (b. 1950) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose drawings of lesbians are intended to depict the authentic details of lesbian life as it is really lived.
Tanchak writes that the "goal of my lesbian drawings is to capture images of lesbians that are not necessarily recognizable individuals, not personal portraits, but representations or icons of lesbian culture: dykes on bikes, dancing couples, women drumming. These are mundane and generic activities and stances average heterosexuals seldom associate with lesbian existence. All these images were drawn from life, part of an invisible lesbian culture that thrives under the radar of mainstream pop culture, is rarely depicted in the arts," and is "unrecognized in world religions. . . . We need authentic lesbian images."
"My intention for these drawings is to begin to reveal the integrity, dignity, humor, and commitment that we have as lesbians, individually and collectively, so that we can be recognized by the world, and more importantly, so that we can see ourselves in one another."
