Lisa Zilker (b. 1968) painted large abstract oils for years, but has seen her work expand into new subjects and media more recently. Zilker writes that the work shown here "is personal and expresses inner thoughts and emotions" in a way that is relatively new for her.
While she created these works using encaustic on canvas, an ancient and traditional method in painting, she often incorporates less conventional materials in her work including ground rose petals, other natural minerals, and cows' blood. "As a feminist," she writes, "blood is a primal element."
