Richard Chamberlain (b. 1935) is a television, film, and theater actor who achieved television stardom in the title role of NBC's Dr. Kildare, which began its immensely successful five-year run in 1961. Following his success as Dr. Kildare, Chamberlain left television to accept a variety of stage and film roles.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, he returned to television as "the king of the mini-series," starring in Centennial (1978), Shogun (1980), and The Thorn Birds (1983), a blockbuster that attracted about 110 million viewers.
