Actors and Celebrities

Actress and gay icon Judy Garland (1922-1969) rose to stardom as a teenager when she played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939). In the film, she first sang her signature song "Over the Rainbow," the closest thing we have to a gay national anthem.

Not only was Garland a gay favorite, but she surrounded herself with gay men in her private life as well. Even two of her husbands, Vincente Minnelli, Liza Minnelli's father, and Tom Herron, who had a love affair with Liza's husband Peter Allen, were gay men.
