Musical Artists

Michael Tilson Thomas (b. 1944) is a pianist, composer, and the first gay conductor to achieve prominence without concealing his homosexuality.

As a conductor and musical director, Tilson Thomas has pushed audiences to rethink the relationship between classical music and homosexuality by celebrating gay composers such as Lou Harrison and commissioning works from David Del Tredici and others that explore the experiences of gay men and lesbians.
