Musical Artists

Singer, songwriter, and teen heartthrob Johnnie Ray (1927-1990) caused a sensation in the 1950s with emotionally-charged concert performances of hit songs, including the chart-topping "Cry," that earned him the moniker "Prince of Wails." Arrests for soliciting in 1951 and 1959 damaged Ray's career, but he continued to perform until he entered the terminal stage of alcoholism-induced liver disease in 1989.
